Raised Centers For Bridge?

Choose this option if you want raised center pole piece magnets on your bridge. This helps with string balance on fingerboards with a radius of less than 9.5 inches.

Neck-Sized Bridge

In some cases, Fender Mexican Jazz Bass will have an equal-sized Neck & Bridge pickup. We can make this for you. Measure your pickups, and if they are the same, check this box!

Due to the nature of Raw Nickel, Raw Nickel may contain slight cosemetic defects or abrasions.

We recommend using 2-Conductor With Shield Lead when purchasing a single pickup. 2-Conductor lead allows you to reverse the phase should you have phase issues. Learn More

Overview

The Fralin P-J Set includes our Stock P-Bass pickup, and our noiseless and rich Split Jazz Bridge. This set is noiseless in all positions, with a fat and rich tone. Our Split Jazz Bridge has a Left-Right coil design, which sounds better than stacked coils. The Fralin P-J Set gives you more snarl on your bridge and deep lows on your neck.

All of our bass pickups feature hand-built bobbins and hand-wound clarity. Our manufacturing process allows us to achieve unparalleled quality control. This P-J Set consists of local fiberboard and USA-Made Magnets. We wind each pickup by hand, one at a time. Each pickup is wound using our proprietary “Sectioning” technique. This gives the pickup a sweet, clear tone. Finally, we wax-pot the pickup to preserve the pickup and prevent microphonics.

Sound

The Fralin P-J Set is the best sounding P-J Pickup Set you can buy. Alnico 5 Magnets and our hand-wound coils give this P-J Set an impressive range and articulation. Expect deep, rich lows and a top-end sparkle – all across a warm and fat midrange. The P-Bass pickup has an even balance across highs and lows. The compensated Split Jazz Bridge focuses more on a thicker midrange snarl. The volume is equal across all positions. The Fralin P-J Set will breathe life into your bass by extending its range and dynamics.

FAQs

  • What’s the difference between the Split Jazz and Normal Jazz Bass? The Split Jazz is a little thicker and darker sounding, with a tad bit more output.
  • Can I customize any of the outputs? Sure! Just request them in the Notes field on the checkout screen.
  • How do I orient the pickups? We always recommend installing with the Black Lead coming out of the treble side.
  • Help! I installed them, and they are out of phase! No problem. Just reverse one of the pickups’ leads in the control cavity (swap White and Black).
  • Do you have Foam or Mounting Plates?  As it turns out we don’t. You can use the styrofoam wrap the pickup was shipped in to mount the pickup – we use that all the time.

7 Questions about P-J Set

  1. Need help here. I have 2 bass necks, one 7.25” maple neck and one 9.5” rosewood neck. I haven’t decided which neck to use on my P/J project. Should I select the rising center pole option for this set? How does a J pickup with rising center poles sound with a 9.5” neck? How does a J pickup without rising center poles sound with a 7.25” neck?

    1. Hey CK, I would just go for the Raised Poles if I were you. In either neck, they will still sound great.

  2. Is the bridge J pickup 5% overwound by default? How can I order a P/J set with a 10% overwound bridge? Thanks.

    1. Hey CK, The Bridge does in fact have a +5% bridge pickup by default. To order anything different, you can simply use the “Notes” field on the checkout screen to request it! We’ll do it at no additional charge.

  3. I have an old aria pro Ii bass I. Going to throw new hardware on. It has a switch to go from active to passive pickups. Can this handle both settings?

    1. Hey Dave, yep! our P / J set will handle both Active and Passive settings.

  4. I have a Mike Lull 5 string built in 2010 with a P-J pup set up. The bass plays well, but I don’t like the too bright sound, prefer more low end and warmth. It is strung with T-I jazz flats, my strings of choice. I’m also a pick player and like the sound of my Lakland Bob Glaub which I believe has Fralin P-J set. Could I get a similar tone on the mike lull P-J?

    1. Hey Sherman, yes of course, and I’d recommend the +5% if you feel your bass is a little bright. This will balance it out a bit.

  5. I have a cheap Fender PJ bass. I am wondering if I could get a better sound from the instrument with better pickups. Purpose: a bass in my home studio that can be used by myself or others who are recording. Sound: Looking for classic folk rock/soul/pop sounds. Studio mostly used by songwriters and bands. Strings: going to be using flat wound strings on the instrument. Thanks, your recommendation is appreciated

    1. Hey Jeffrey, yes a pickup upgrade is an affordable way to drastically improve the tone of your bass. I would recommend either the Stock output P-J Set or the +5%, depending on how deep and rich you want the tone to be.

  6. Hi! Would the PJ bass set fit on an fender mustang PJ bass? It’s a short scale bass so I wasn’t sure if they have different sized pickups or not.

    1. That’s a really good question. I believe they fit, but please check our spacing diagrams for our P-Bass and our Jazz Bass.

  7. I would like to replace my Delano PJ pickups with this? Is it possible? It seems like ypur PJ set is a little bigger? Please help / Martin

    1. Hey Martin,

I’m not sure if our pickups will be a drop-in replacement without a bit of routing. Our pickups seem to be a slightly bigger footprint on all dimensions.

I recently purchased a set of P-J Bass guitar pickups. As I have come to learn, Lindy takes the time to go over your order to ensure you have chosen the correct pickup configuration, (over/under wound percentages) that will help you achieve “your tone”. I also bought pots to upgrade the electronics on my new Bass. Again Lindy assisted in helping choose the correct pots to compliment the pickups I ordered. I have recommended to my musician friends to check out Lindy Fralin pickups if they are looking to upgrade their Guitar or Bass guitar. I would purchase from LF again.
